Improved scatterometer sea surface wind speed predictions during rain

Abstract:The accuracy of sea surface wind speed measurements by spaceborne ASCAT and QUIKSCAT scatterometers during rain is improved in this study using spatial matching of the measured scatterometer sea surface wind speeds with in-situ buoy data for various spatial windows determined to be the optimal window angle. Then, the ASCAT and QUIKSCAT scatterometer sea surface wind speed errors were analyzed for typical rain rates to develop a more accurate scatterometer wind speed model during rain. Tests show that the ASCAT wind speed errors decrease from 2.5 m/s to 1.4 m/s, while the QUIKSCAT wind speed errors decrease from 4.3 m/s to 2.2 m/s.
