Abstract China's hydropower construction companies need to improve their design management skills to compete in the international engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) market. A design management model was used to identify the relationships between partnering with stakeholders, design management and project performance. Data from 7 hydropower EPC projects in 6 countries was evaluated using reliability tests, factor analyses and path analyses to show that design management is dependent on system building, dispute settlements, value adding and technology promotion. Partnering with stakeholders, design management and project performance are positively related. Partnering not only enhances project performance by promoting effective design management, but also directly improves project performance.
