Abstract  The focal accent in standard Chinese affects the articulatory and acoustical properties of the segments inside and outside the narrow focus domain. The linguopalatal contacts of the segments /t/ and /i/ were obtained using electropalatography (EPG), with electroglottographic (EGG) and acoustic signals simultaneously recorded. The results show that the narrow focus domain has larger linguopalatal contact and alveolar seal duration for /t/. The vocal folds during the consonantal closure interval tend to be tense. The tongue gesture of /i/ is raised and fronted. The duration and intensity of the vowels become longer and louder and their spectral properties are modified. The spill-over effect of the focal accent is not clear but the production of the segments inside the narrow focus domain are generally strengthened. The focal accent does not affect the articulation and acoustical properties of segments outside the domain.
