Abstract Performance analyzes are difficult in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This study analyzes the performance of a star topology WSN based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The probability of data collision is analyzed for the hidden terminal problem caused by channel fading. Then, the model is used to derive the packet reception rate (PRR), the average delay and the average energy consumption. Simulation results are within 5% of the theoretical results which validate the correctness and accuracy of the theoretical expressions.
